Daily Matrix:
Day 1 -- Introduction
Key focus: Climate, geography, habitat, maps, environment
Activities:
1. Explanation about temperature, thermometers, measuring; hands on activities measuring temperature of different solutions and areas of the room, the soil, environment, water, etc.
2. Introduction and review of the globe, polar regions, etc.
3. Story about the Polar Bears and the Arctic
4. Introduction to weather, plus short activities illustrating weather differences
5. Understanding precipitation -- where water is stored, build an iceberg
6. Understanding temperature, melting activities and experiments
7. Understanding elevation and how to find it -- group activity, find cities that might be in danger if the sea level rose x% (science activity, dry ice in water, volume, etc.)
8. Individual art projects -- illustrate environmental terms
9. Crossword puzzle activities on terms and concepts
10. Environment walk around the neighborhood, weather permitting.
11. Circle the Wagons -- read additional stories, assignment is to ask parents about their family and if they or their family has ever lived in a very different climate, describe it.
Day 2 -- What is Climate Change?
Key focus: What is Climate change? What are its causes? What are its effects? How do everyday activities contribute to it?
Activities:
1. What do we know about climate change?
2. Film -- Causes of Climate Change (discussion)
3. Art -- Break into groups, draw cards with name of each major climate group, groups illustrate and write a paragraph about that climate, then present to group.
4. Film -- Problems caused by climate change (discussion).
5. Reflection -- Individual paragraph on potential problems on climate change.
6. Animation on what causes climate change (discussion).
7. Animation on how everyday actions cause climate change.
8. Individual art project on their families actions
Polar Bear Habitat Powerful yet fragile; these words best describe the polar bear and the habitat where the bears reside. The polar bear is an animal of supreme beauty and power. Polar bears can kill swiftly with one powerful strike from their expansive paws. The inviting cuddly image of the polar bear hides the quiet power, of a fierce predator. Polar bears may be lost to the world forever if the
Prisoner's Dilemma situations are more common than some might actually think they are, as most people often come across them in their daily lives. Given the fact that Axelrod has a background in political science, he observed that PD is frequently encountered in the U.S. Senate. Senators are accustomed to helping out their colleagues, as they are perfectly aware that their assistance will materialize in their colleagues repaying them. The
The human causes of global warming are less certain than the eventual depletion of fossil fuels, but the damages predicted to result from uncontrolled warming brought on by fossil fuels are so great that the gamble becomes too great. Only the same intentions as listed above would take this risk with future generations. The Need for Action The ethical and social issues at work in the use of fossil fuels and
Scientists are unable to determine the amounts of gases that will be released into the atmosphere because the early studies on permafrost melting are no longer accurate. The melting of the permafrost does not only affect the environment because of the gases that it releases, but also, because it would lead to the erosion of the Arctic coastlines. This would have a devastating impact on the industry present there and
ears are blasted daily by the drumbeat of environmental forewarnings. The seas are rising. The glaciers are melting. Don't drive -- take the bus. Recycle. Turn off the lights. Adjust that thermostat. Save the polar bears! Reduce your carbon footprint! Nothing against carbon, or ecologists, or polar bears, but while society focuses on reducing carbon footprints, why aren't more folks out there creating footprints for God? Who is marching through
